Google search engine optimisation and their 80/20 rule

Posted on September 6th, 2006. About SEO Contest, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Generation.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

Search engine optimisation or optimization (with a ‘z’ or is that ‘zee’ if your from across ‘the pond’) techniques are constantly evolving. This evolution is in response to the evolution of search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. Google in particular has come to be seen as the most sophisticated and advanced search engine as it is armed with an array of anti-spam technology.

Google’s increasing use of anti-spam features has meant that optimising websites for Google has become much harder and it’s now not just a case of opening your websites source files in notepad, adding some keywords into your various HTML tags, uploading your files and waiting for the results. In fact in my opinion and I’m sure others will agree with me, this type of optimisation, commonly referred to as onpage optimisation will only ever be 20% effective at achieving rankings for any keywords which are even mildly competitive. Those of us who aced maths in school will know this leaves us with 80% unaccounted for.

This 80% corresponds to offpage optimization. Offpage optimization is all to do with the amount of links pointing to your site and its pages, the actual linking text (anchor text) of these links and the quality of the pages which the links are on. Offpage optimisation is now for sure the overwhelmingly dominating factor which decides where a site will rank in Google. That then is what I mean by the 80/20 rule, I’m not talking about the pareto rule which means that in anything a few (20 percent) are vital and many (80 percent) are trivial, I’m not sure that applies to SEO.

What is the logic behind this then, why does Google give so much ‘weight’ (80%) to offpage optimization efforts and so little (20%) to onpage optimisation. Well simply put it is all about the quality of their results. Whereas onpage optimisation is completely controlled by the webmaster and can thus be abused by an unscrupulous one, offpage optimisation is something that is not controlled by anyone as such by rather by other webmasters, websites and indeed the Internet in general. This means that it is much harder to conduct any underhanded or spammy offpage optimisation methods in the hope of gaining an unfair advantage for a website in the Google SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages), this does not mean it is impossible though.

Let’s elaborate for a paragraph or two just why offpage elements such as incoming links are deemed by Google to be such a good measure of relevancy, thus making offpage optimisation the most effective method of optimisation by far. Take the anchor text of incoming links for instance, if Google sees a link from SITE A to SITE B with the actual linking text being the words ‘data recovery london’, then SITE B has just become more relavent and thus more likely to appear higher in the rankings when someone searches for ‘data recovery london’. SITE B has no control over SITE A (in most cases…) and Google knows this. Google can then look at the link text and say to itself, why would SITE A link to SITE B with the specific words ‘data recovery london’ if SITE B wasn’t ‘about’ ‘data recovery london’, there is no answer so Google must deem SITE B to be ‘about’ ‘data recovery london’.

I said ‘in most cases’ above because often webmasters have multiple sites and would crosslink them with keyword rich anchor text, but there is only so many sites and crosslinks any webmaster can manage, again Google knows this and so as the number of backlinks and occurrences of keyword rich anchor text grows (and with that grows the unlikelihood of anything unnatural like crosslinking going on) so to does the relevancy of the site which all the backlinks point to. Imagine hundreds or thousands of sites all linking to a website X with variations of ‘data recovery london’ type phrases as the linking text, well then Google can be pretty dam sure that website X is ‘about’ ‘data recovery london’ and feel confident about returning it in the top 10 results. This is why they place so much importance (80%) on offpage ranking factors such as links; they are simply the most reliable way of checking what a site is about and indeed how well it covers what it is about. This reliance on hard to cheat offpage factors is what produces the quality search results we all know, love and use everyday.

The moral of the story from an SEO point of view then is to spend less time on those little website tweaks which you think might make a big difference (but won’t) and work hard on what really counts, what really counts is how the web ’sees’ your website, the more quality (keyword rich) incoming links your website has the better the webs ‘view’ will be and therefore the better Google’s view of your website will be. What Google thinks of your website is very important, as they ‘look after’ websites which they like.

Why Google Sitemaps is a Win-Win Situation for Webmasters

Get the right scripts for business

The process of informing search engines about new pages in your website or about new websites in your care can be quite a time consuming task. The submissions process is just way too much trouble for its own good that even the search engines have realized that it is a path not worth pursuing and completely stopped using this method a long time ago.

There have been many innovations presented since then as a way of simplifying the submission process and eliminate most of the drudgery that has been associated with this task. With the development Google Sitemaps, the process has indeed been a big help to many webmasters and business owners. In fact, many people contend that Google Sitemaps is probably the most important development on the internet since the RSS, blogs and ping.

RSS, blog and ping had actually been used by webmasters as tools in informing search engines about new additions to their websites even though this function was not the primary purpose of the aforementioned innovations. Of course, Google Sitemaps is so much faster and easier to use compared to the said systems and this is the reason why it has risen in popularity and is now acknowledged as the most effective way of updating a website to search engines. In fact, this new innovation of using sitemaps for the search engine submission process has become a very vital part of operating a website and a webmaster can ignore it at his own risk.

There may still be some sceptics who may still not believe that a sitemap method of submitting new web pages or new content to a website is very effective. One reason why using the sitemap method like Google Sitemaps is that the technology was developed from the ground up with solely one primary goal, which is to alert and direct the Google search engine spiders to the web pages that you have specified. All the other methods are considered as indirect and submissions to search engines are not their primary purpose either.

Clearly, using Google sitemaps provides a win-win situation for webmasters and online business owners.

First, Google sitemaps limits the huge waste of the resources needed to crawl web site that have not changed. The technology allows webmasters to inform Google which pages have changed or if there are new content added to a website and then direct Google’s spiders directly to those pertinent pages.

Google Sitemaps also radically speeds up the process of discovery and addition of pages to Google’s web site index. This can only be achieved if you use the technology and nothing else.

Google Sitemaps offers a level of usability that is different from conventional sitemaps because it offers a directory of all the web pages in the web site that the webmaster or online business owner wants the search engine to visit.

Without the assistance of sitemaps like Google’s, it may become hard for a web page to be found by the search engine crawlers. There is even a chance that the page may not be found at all.

XML-Sitemaps.com provides a free online Google Sitemaps generator which will also help you find and fix broken links.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Writing Articles

Posted on September 4th, 2006. About SEO Contest, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Generation.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

Writing and submitting articles is an effective marketing strategy to deliver targeted visitors, increase your rankings and boost sales. However, it is easy to equate article writing with onerous tasks such as writing high school or university essays. The memories of the pain involved in this form of writing can take time to fade away. The good news is that after learning a few simple steps, writing your own articles isn’t as hard as it appears.

One of the biggest hurdles most new writers face is finding ideas to write about. The easiest way to begin is to write about things you are interested in and preferably passionate about. You already have knowledge in these areas which can be shared with others. It is easy to under-estimate your own abilities in areas you are experienced in. Talented people are often surprised by the level of questions novices ask (it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question - only stupid answers).

Once you have decided on a general area, a good way to narrow the topic down is to focus on the problems that people have. Typically, people read articles because they want to be entertained or they want information. Writing entertaining articles is a particular and more difficult skill. However, writing informative articles can be as simple as sharing tips that you have learned. A guiding principle is to expect the readers to be looking for “What’s in it for me”.

You may already know the common problems that people have in the particular field, but if not, a good source of information is to look at related online forums and note the most common questions asked. If you don’t have all the answers a small bit of research can assist. Often the answers are readily available with a Google search which the readers could do themselves. However, you are adding value and convenience by providing a range of answers in a single document.

Most people don’t like to read large documents from the Web, so unlike long essays, articles tend to be around 400 words long. If you break the article into an introduction, a small number of sub-headings and a conclusion you may only have to write about 50 words in each section. The sub-headings may be for authoring purposes only, but if they are relevant they can be left in the final article.

The first draft should be for your eyes only. Don’t try to produce a final copy as you write. It tends to be much quicker to get your thoughts down and come back to edit later. The final step in the writing process is to proofread your article making sure that the writing flows and would be interesting to the reader. Ask yourself, ‘does the article provide information the potential reader is looking for?’ It can also be helpful to have someone else proofread the article. This is also the time to remove spelling and grammatical errors.

If you still have problems writing you may want to do a search for ‘article writing software’. There are many packages around which can make the process easier. Similarly, there are numerous e-books available on the topic and many of them are available for free.

Once you have written your article you may want to add it to your own website as an item that search engines love - a piece of original content. If you add an ‘About the Author’ section with a link to your website, you can also submit it to article directories. As other websites publish your article you receive another thing that search engines look for, one-way back links. Article submission can be a tedious process, but software and websites that can submit to multiple directories in one go exist to make the job much easier.

After writing your first few articles you will find it is not as daunting as it first appears. You never know, you may even want to offer your services as a freelance writer on the Internet as a way to make some extra income.

Getting To The Top Of Google … Fast

Posted on September 3rd, 2006. About SEO Contest, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Generation.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

When it comes to SEO, the fastest and best way to climb the search engine rankings is with lots of back links from relevant sites. Of course that may not exactly be breaking news for many of you.

What many people don’t realize however is that an ages old offline marketing tactic may be one of the best ways to get lots of the highest quality back links.

You see, Google and Yahoo both “weight” the strength of the link to you based on a wide variety of factors. Links from authority and news sites count for more than links from a “commercial” site. It is therefore better if you can get your site into the news … and linked to from a news article, than it is to simply buy links.

Further, and one thing that many people don’t realize is that google also tracks the click throughs of links. In other words, google considers a link that gets clicked on to be more “real” … and weights such a link heavier … than a link which is not clicked through. So, a link from a PR5 news site that people click through (because the article is flattering), is “worth more” in terms of aiding your google ranking than a link from a PR7 site that people largely ignore.

Therefore, using the “offline” technique of getting publicity about your site will be one of the single most valuable activities in your link building campaign.

Even better, links from news sites will drive your site up the rankings farther … and faster … than almost any other single thing.

Now, here’s the best thing about getting into the news … If you do get mentioned in a newspaper, you can count on a flood of visitors coming to your site and buying … and the numbers will be far greater than anything delivered by a search engine.

You’ll quickly discover that simply the mention of your site in a decent sized newspaper will bring you more sales than almost any other activity there is. This is why I find it so amazing that given the benefits to the search engines, and the benefits in terms of nearly instant sales, that so few webmasters and self-proclaimed SEO “experts” bother to perm any publicity gaining activities at all.

This of course raises the issue of “how do you GET publicity”. Before I go any farther, let me say that space considerations (not to mention the amount of time it would take me) prevent me from making this a complete dissertation on the subject of publicity. I do give many more additional details on this subject (no charge) at my site (http://www.dannywall.com/seo.htm).

With that said, the first and most important thing to not do is to send out some dull, boring “press release” via PR Newswire or broadcast fax to every reporter in the nation. These things are almost never read, nor do they (except on a basis that makes playing the lottery look like good odds) result in a news reporter actually doing a story on you.

The reason for this is simple. People don’t care about you, your products, or what new thing you’re coming out with. Not only that, but all the yammering about integrity aside, newspapers are in business to make money. The only way that happens is when there are stories in the paper that people actually want to read.

That means that a journalist’s job is to write compelling stories that people will care about, or at least will enjoy reading. Journalists are paid (too little in my opinion) to take stories of occasionally only minor interest and turn them into great stories that people read.

Further, the job of the average journalist is exceedingly difficult as a result of the nasty deadlines they operate under.

So the first and most important thing that you can do in your efforts to get written about is to consider what you can do to make the reporters’ job easier (and again, one of those things is not to write a story for them).

One of the best ways is to actually consider what is REALLY newsworthy, and then, sending out a press release that interest the reporter enough that they want to find out more.

Once that’s done, you’ll need to make it easy for the reporter to do their own research. Giving them links to prove your numbers, links to other relevant stories, links to outside objective opinions written about you, your company, and your products.

It also means that when a reporter calls, you’d better answer the phone (you, not your secretary … a reporter gets your direct line) … or if there is a VERY good reason for not answering, you’re calling back within 30 minutes. This last item is important (remember what I said about their deadlines) if you expect the reporter to actually write about you.

You see, because a reporter is working under such a wicked schedule, they need you. It is important for you to remember that if you want those top rankings, the traffic, and the sales, you need them as well.

The next thing you can do to make a reporters life easier is to tie your products in with the latest and most breaking news available. As an example, lets say you manufacture a wrist protector. During a football game, a famous wide receiver breaks their wrist. You promptly send out a press release to sports writers about the break … and point out that had the player been wearing your protector the break wouldn’t have happened. In th release you let the reporter know you can give independent evidence of the veracity of your statements.

The thing you have to remember is that most reporters are DELUGED with press releases. If you want to be written about, your press releases have to stand out. It must tie in with current events or somehow tie in with basic human emotions (and remember the news axiom “if it bleeds it leads”).

If you want to be written about, be bold, be creative, be controversial, even better, be all three.

Will some people be “upset” about you being controversial? Maybe … probably even (hey, it isn’t controversial otherwise!). However, consider it a GOOD THING. Stir the controversy, and while all of the whiners are wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth, you get to laugh all the way to the bank.

Effective SEO Tools For Site Owners

Posted on September 2nd, 2006. About SEO Contest, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Generation.

Get the right scripts for business

First of all, I want to insist that this article is aimed at site owners since occasionally site owners and webmasters are not the same. Suppose a realtor owns a real estate website. But, she is just a newbie on the Internet and she depends on the webmaster (e.g.from hosting provider) in her website’s SEO campaign. In fact, that webmaster couldn’t understand real estate industry deeply like her and he has many other sites to manage. So the SEO campaign wouldn’t get the expected result. In most cases, the site owners will play an important part in the achievement of SEO campaign. However, HTML language, search engines, link popularity, PageRank seem so unfamiliar with them at first. Therefore, the goal of this article is providing the novice site owners with some basic but efficient tools and knowledge in Search Engine Optimisation. This will assist site owners in cooperating better with webmasters or SEO agencies to increase their web sites’ ranking in Search Engines.

1. Search Engines -You are a site owner and you yourself should get familiar with search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN Search to search for your competitors’ sites to see how they are positioning themselves in the marketplace, analyze the keywords, check your sites’ link popularity (the number of links to your website from other sites) and link saturation (number of pages on your sites have been indexed by search engine). These search engine syntaxes aren’t theoretical as you’ve thought and you don’t need to pay attention to the complex algorithms behind them. For instance, to check whether your sites are indexed, just type site:your_site_domain in search engines. Remember that your_site_url and your_site_domain are not identical. Site domain does not contain http:// while site URL must have (ex: http://your_site_domain/your_page.htm is a URL of your website).

Assume the SEO firm, in their optimisation report, would ask the site owners to exchange links with other relevant websites to improve the link popularity. The problem is: where can I find the other sites? Don’t be concerned, search engines can help you. Site owners can learn from their competitors about which websites they’ve exchanged links with by checking their link popularity.

In short, if you want search engines to help bring in business, you should become friendly with them first. Search engines are always beneficial friends (despite the fact that they are not easy to control!).

2. HTML basic syntax and HTML editor - Site owners are not obligated to master HTML language to re-design their pages. That is not their task. But basic syntaxes are always needed. They should know to locate where the block in an html page is to add new auto-generated Meta-tags. I’ve mentioned auto-generated Meta-tags because site owners don’t need to code the Meta-tags either. With “Meta-tags Generator” keyword, they can find that on search engines thousands of websites are welcoming them to use their tool. Besides, the html link syntax is also worthwhile to remember: Look at this simple code your descriptive text which you send to other site owners for link exchange. Your website has many pages for exchanging links so it is important to know this link code to change your_site_url_1 to other pages and your descriptive text respectively. In addition, with the knowledge of html syntax, you can open your web pages and insert the links at your own and stop calling webmasters regularly for editing pages with links. Nowadays, html editors such as FrontPage, DreamWeaver can highly simplify this task in the similar way as you are working with MS Word. Just choose the position in Design view (in FrontPage) and paste the link code in the Code view at the cursor.

3. Google toolbar - Google Toolbar is a valuable tool for web surfers and even more useful to site owners to check PageRank. PageRank is a Google’s grade (from 0 to 10) to analyze the quality and quantity of links that point to a page. With high pageranks, they don’t ensure a high position in Google’s search results but they can tell us many things. PageRank inspires site owners in the long routine of SEO. The little green color on this bar resembles fruits in the tree of our efforts and we are motivated to dig more in SEO. On top of that, PageRank helps site owners to find appropriate sites to exchange links with. Seek for the sites with the same level (pagerank) to foresee the success of your link exchange requests. To install Google toolbar to your browsers (Internet Explorer or Firefox), just start by typing Google toolbar in search engines and follow the first result.

In this article, I have provided the site owners with some basic but efficient tools to come along their SEO campaigns. They include, but not limit to, search engines, HTML editor and Google toolbar. In addition, there exists others such as FTP tool, Google sitemap, Link Directory software, etc… The important thing to novice site owners is leaving behind your main profession and get your hands wet with these tools. Webmaster and SEO firm can’t do everything for you. Learning SEO tools today will never be too late and squandered.

Generating Free Leads With Traffic Exchanges

If you’ve been involved in internet marketing you are aware of the importance of using traffic exchanges to generate free prospects to your websites. To get the most out of this resource you need to kick it up a notch.

I’ve added 10 or so traffic exchanges to the mix and am now generating an average of 150-300 new visits to my website every day.

The first thing you’ll want to do is download a free tool called a tabbed browser that will greatly help in managing these sites.

www.avantbrowser.com

Without this you would have to have 20 windows open at one time and go from one site to the next trying to surf through each one. Impossible. This will save you a tremendous amount of time and effort.

Here is a list of the traffic exchanges I’ve found to be the best at generating traffic to my site. The other strategy to look at is in buying credits on these sites. You’ll not need to surf so much but will still get the traffic. Keep in mind that your audience in these traffic exchanges are primarily network marketers. make sure your offering is a service, product or tool they can use to build their business.

It will take a bit of work on your part to get all of these set up and your website(s) url listed in each one. Then you’ll want to open each one of your surfing links into your Advant Browser and save it to a group. Once you’ve done that you can open up the group and start surfing.

To Your Success!
