The rise of the games console

Upon the official launch of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which spent several years in the making, the hardware from Gates and company received plenty of consumer hype. It was heralded by some as the big system watch in the upcoming next-generation console wars—a force with which to be reckoned.

However, the Playstation 3 has its fans that feel that they are experts in high-definition technology, enjoy planning more games than the “other guy” and want to get the most for their money. Sony fans wanted to convince themselves that it was wise to wait for the PS3 (Playstation 3).

360’s launch lineup was impressive; there are 18 games and five first-person shooters. It can even be argued that the 360’s overall average quality of titles is greater than that of any previous system. And yet not a single game is a Killer App? Where’s the Halo? Where’s the Mario? Where’s the unbridled interest?

It’s a fact that PS2 launched with an unimpressive collection of games and PS 1 featured a similarly undistinguished lineup. With the advent of PS3, however, Microsoft may have wished it more heavily accentuated one game its new console could always be known for. PS3 has plenty to brag about with the Metal Gear potential, Warhawk, Tekken, I-8, Gran Turismo, Killzone and a dozen other high profile games that are already hits with PlayStation fans.

Business Week magazine compiled a report that estimates the total cost of components in the “premium” bundle of the Xbox 360 system sold at $525 USD, sans manufacturing costs, meaning that Microsoft is losing money on every Xbox 360 system sold. In the console game industry, the strategy of selling a console at a loss or near-less is common. Console makers can usually expect to make up the loss through game licensing.

Microsoft was never able to reduce Xbox manufacturing costs below the break-even point. Their home division, as a result, posted a loss through nearly every quarter of the console’s lifecycle. Microsoft is predicting that with the Xbox 360, a greater market share and falling hardware costs will eventually make system sales profitable.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s competitor, Sony confirmed a unified online service at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo. The name of the service has been entitled “PlayStation Network Platform”. Sony has confirmed that the service will be free and will have sufficient functionality for online gaming. The online service is being developed in cooperation by Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Online Entertainment.

However, which the Microsoft Xbox already retails at just over $500, the Sony Playstation 3 is expected to retail for around $1000 upon launch. Added to this, Nintendo’s Wii is expected to retail for around $200.

The disparity of pricing between game systems means that the home video games market is being stratified. No longer will it be a case of which system is best, as much as what price you are willing to pay for home entertainment from video games.

Psp Games: Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Psp Games
Marvel Ultimate Alliance may look just to be another spin off for the psp that is exactly like the ps2 version, well your wrong. Fans of Legends will discover that developer Raven Software has gone out of its way to progress Ultimate Alliance into a new level of depth.

Doctor Doom has revives the Masters of Evil, who, by name alone, you should realize are not good people. In the opening CG cut-scened, designed by Blue Studios, Doom attacks the SHIELD HeliCarrier. Nick Fury calls down the heroes. Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor and Wolverine spring into action.

This short cut-scene shows Raven’s attention to comic-book detail. The characters are perfectly portrayed. Spidey cracks wise and Thor displays both his power and his arrogance. When Captain America gives Wolverine an order, the Canuck replies coolly, “Stow it Boy Scout, I don’t take orders from you.” If you remember the beautiful cut-scenes from X-Men Legends II, just know that Ultimate Alliance’s initial cut-scene is even better

Though the gameplay looks similar to X-Men Legends, some new kinks have been added. Captain America can control his shield in real time. That’s right. He chucks his shield and it can bounce of walls on it sway to an enemy. As Palmisano explained, “Every character has a bunch of different powers like this. You launch the shield, hold down a button, and move the shield with the analogue stick.”

In X-Men Legends II, you earned bonuses for assembling certain X-Men and given them specific costumes. The team bonuses are back, but in addition you now get an extra bonus for using the same characters through multiple missions. As Palmisano explained, “You can, at any point, make a team name and a team icon. They then at that point establish a reputation, not only for what they are doing in various points of the game, but how they work together. So then if you went into act 3 with no rep and no stats they wouldn’t be as valuable to you.”
That doesn’t mean you are stuck with only four characters from start to finish. You can dynamically substitute characters and still be effective. You can even create a new team. But the longer you keep a group together, the better they will work as a unit. Makes sense.

As you play co-op online, thats right online. Although the psp version is still unclear to have online but i am sure they will have it. You can not only play with friends, but against them at the same time. Though you are trying to save the universe, you are also earning points. That point-earning is a competition. Think of it like showing up the other heroes.Though Activision isn’t ready to give everything away, a couple of extra goodies were revealed during the demo. Comic books are hidden throughout the levels. Finding these unlock “Heroic Missions”. These missions are separate from the main story and allow you to relive a moment from a hero’s past. These are character-specific, so hopefully we have one for every playable character in the game. The PSP will also have an interesting extra. Raven couldn’t reveal what this was, but Palmisano gave us a tantalizing hint: “One of the features we’re not talking about, but it’s going to be exciting. Vicarious Visions is developing the PSP version and are very ambitious. There might be some new PSP functionality coming along that will debut in the game. Breast Pump Glossary and Breastfeeding Terms

2-phase expression
A feature on some breast pumps by Medela (Symphony, Pump In Style Advanced– not Original– and the new Swing), that starts the cycling fast with less suction then after two minutes switches to slower cycling with more vacuum strength to imitate the sucking patterns of infants. A special let-down button can be pressed once to go instantly to the second mode. The manual breast pump Harmony is also said to have 2-phase. The first phase is initiated by squeezing the short part of the handle, with the longer, stronger strokes of the second phase coming from switching the hand around to squeeze the long part of the handle.

areola
The dark circular area around the nipple. It is important during breast feeding for the baby to latch on with as much areola in his or her mouth as possible.

baby scale
For mothers concerned about low milk supply a baby scale is a tool to verify baby’s weight gain and also the amount of breast milk received in any given nursing. By weighing the baby before and after nursing and doing a little subtraction, one can determine the number of ounces the baby nursed from the breast. Since a nursing baby is usually more efficient than any breast pump, this method is preferred to breast pumping for determining how much milk the baby may be getting. For these purposes a baby scale accurate to 15 grams or less may be rented from many breast pump rental stations.

battery pack, batteries
In a breast pump, batteries give cordless convenience but vacuum strength and cycles per minute may be less than the user will find when using the AC adapter. Also pump cycling may slow as the batteries wear down. Slower cycles may cause some discomfort because the vacuum will be held longer on the breast. If this happens, reduce the vacuum and replace the batteries with fresh ones as soon as possible.

breast pads
Absorbent material of cloth of paper inserted in the bra between nursings to absorb milk leaks. They may be disposable or washable, but a healthy pad should allow for good airflow to the nipple. Plastic liners are discouraged or only for occasional use.

breast pump
A device that expresses milk from the breast. A misconception is that the breast pump suctions milk out of the breast. A breast pump’s job is to trigger the milk-ejection response or let-down. Most pumps achieve this goal by using suction to pull the nipple into the tunnel of the breast shield or flange then release, which counts as one cycle. Thirty to sixty cycles per minute can be expected with better quality electric breast pumps. It is important to note that in most cases the breast pump is not as efficient at removing milk from the breast as the nursing baby. Many mothers find their milk supply dwindling when they substitute too many pumpings for actual nursing sessions with their baby.

breast pump reviews
Opinions by actual users of the breast pumps. Two good places to find some reviews on the internet are Amazon and Epinions.

breast shells
Rounded pieces of plastic worn inside the bra. Shells come with two types of backs; the one with the larger hole is meant for treatment of sore nipples. The back with the small hole, which fits close to the nipple base, is meant for treating inverted nipples.

breast shields, flanges, funnels
The part of the breast pump that actually touches the breast, covering the nipple and areola area. Medela breast shields fit almost all their pumps and come in sizes 21 mm, 23 mm, 27 mm, 30 mm, 36 mm, and 40 mm. Ameda uses different combinations of flanges and inserts to accommodate nipples in sizes 21 mm, 23 mm, 25 mm, 28.5 mm, 30.5 mm to fit all of their pumps but the Nurture III. See also SoftFit, Flexishield and Let-Down Massage Cushions.

closed system
Breast pumps designed for multiple users, such as hospital grade rental pumps. There is no possibility of breast milk entering the pump motor. See this used breast pumps article for more information. Although the Avent Isis IQ breast pumps are said to be closed system, Avent still recommends their pumps to be single user.

colostrum
The substance produced in the breasts during the final weeks of pregnancy. This “first milk” is highly concentrated in nutrition ideal for the newborn. It has been likened to an “antibodies cocktail.” Colostrum has a laxative effect on the baby, helping him pass his early stools, which aids in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice. With frequent nursings of 10 to 12 times a day, a mother’s regular breast milk will begin to appear or “come in” around day 3 or 4 after birth.

cycling
The suck and release pattern created by a breast pump to simulate what a nursing baby does.

cpm
cycles per minute. See cycling.

double pumping
Pumping both breasts simultaneously. Research with pre-term infants has shown double pumping can increase a mother’s milk supply, reduce expression time (yes, even cutting times in half) and produce higher levels of prolactin, the hormone that stimulates milk production after birth.

engorgement
Any time an insufficient amount of milk has been removed from the lactating breast it may cause this painful condition. The engorgement that occurs when a mother’s milk first “comes in” is a little less understood, since swelling of the breast tissues themselves can be a contributing factor. There are many treatments, one of which is to use a breast pump briefly to soften the areola area so that the baby will be able to latch on easier.

funnel covers
The lid-like covers that snap over the funnel or breast shield of an Avent breast pump. The advantage of a cover is to keep the insides of the funnel and milk container clean and in ready-to-use condition.

Flexishield Areola Massager
A breast shield accessory that can be purchased separately and used with Ameda breast pumps. The Flexishield is designed to compress the areola area, helping to stimulate a let-down reflex. It is especially useful for smaller-breasted women who may benefit from the added stimulation.

hospital grade breast pumps
This group of pumps have a stronger vacuum strength than any other breast pumps and are the most suited to establishing and maintaining a milk supply in a mother who will not be breastfeeding her infant for long periods, as in the situation of a premature or sick infant.

HygieniKit
Included with every Ameda breast pump except the Nurture III, this is a milk collection system that includes a special silicone diaphragm filter. This filter works two ways protecting the pump motor from getting contaminants in it and protecting the breast milk bottle from receiving contaminants from the motor. This extra amount of protection is desired for premature or sick infants or any mother desiring extra caution in the cleanliness of the collection of her milk. The use of the Hygienikit does not negate Ameda’s recommendation that all their pumps (except the hospital rental pumps) be single user, even though the Hygienikit IS the individual user kit for rental pumps.

lactation consultant
A highly specialized healthcare professional with advanced training in breastfeeding management. Because of the nature of their training, their advice on breastfeeding may be more specific and useful than what a mother will receive from her obstetrician or baby’s pediatrician.

lactation aid
A device that consists of a container of usually infant formula or banked breast milk and a long but narrow-diameter tube. The tube is inserted into an infant’s mouth along with the breast while nursing and provides extra nutrition to the infant while the breast simultaneously receives stimulation to encourage lactation. This also prevents a baby from becoming attached to artificial nipples while enabling a mother time to undertake strategies to shore up a lagging milk supply. Should be used under the advice of a lactation consultant as improper use could diminish milk supply.

let-down
Also known as the milk ejection response, it occurs when hormones cause muscles within the breast to squeeze and the ducts to widen, pushing the milk from all parts of the breast toward the nipple. Some mothers feel a tingling sensation; others feel nothing. Let-down is partly a conditioned response and can be encouraged while nursing or breast pumping by engaging in routines (i.e. sitting in the same place, drinking from a certain cup), looking at a picture of the baby, thinking of the milk flowing, or taking the mind off of everything about it.

Let-Down Massage Cushions
The Avent breast pump shields or flanges are soft silicone and have 5 petal-shaped bumps that move in and out to massage the areola and aid let-down. Available in only one size.

milk collection bags
Marketed under different trade names, these plastic bags are intended for the collection and storage of breast milk. They bear a resemblance to disposable bottle liners but have the notable difference of being thicker and stronger. For this reason milk collection bags are more suited for freezing breast milk and for using with breast pumps that permit attaching bags in place of bottles. Attaching disposable bottle liners to a breast pump will not permit a sufficient suction to be created for the pump to function properly.

mmHg
Abbreviation for millimeters of mercury and as it relates to breast pumps it means strength of vacuum or suction. Sufficient pressure is needed to stimulate let-down, not to suction the milk from the breasts as is sometimes erroneously believed. Hospital grade breast pumps have the highest mmHg numbers and are the best for establishing a milk supply in mothers who need help in that area because of low supply issues or a hospitalized newborn. After a supply is well-established some users have found that “less is more” and adjusting the suction lower has enabled better let-down. Fortunately most electric pumps have adjustable vacuum strengths.

open system
A breast pump designed to be used by a single user. See also single user.

parts to assemble
As defined on the Breast Pump Comparison web pages, all the breast pump parts that must be assembled or disassembled at each pumping session not including motor, AC adaptor or battery pack, milk containers, lids, stands, extra breast shields, totes.

parts to wash
As defined on the above referenced web pages , all the breast pump parts that come in contact with the breast or milk, and therefore must be washed every time the user pumps, not counting the receptacle(s) for the milk and the lid(s).

milk ejection response (MER)
see let-down.

multiple user
Hospital grade rental pumps are designed to be multiple user, and rental stations will require the non-refundable and non-returnable purchase of an individual accessory kit for the parts (shields, connectors, tubing) that actually comes in contact with the mother’s breast or milk.

piston-type manual breast pump
The pumping action is created with a sliding piston and cylinder and requires the use of two hands.

rental pumps
See multiple user

single breast pumping
Pumping only one breast at a time. Single pumping is useful for pumping one side while the baby nurses the other. For some mothers the ability to single pump enables them to soothe and hold their baby on one side while pumping the other.

single user
Most breast pumps are personal use items intended to be used by one mother only to prevent the transmission of diseases like HIV and hepatitis. See the used breast pumps page for more information.

SoftFit breast shield
The soft, flexible breast shield that massages the breast and areola when breast pumping, manufactured and trademarked by Medela. Can be used with all Medela pumps but the Little Hearts manual breast pump.

stars
Awarded to breast pumps by actual users on Amazon and Epinions on a five-star scale with five meaning the best. Reading these reviews may be helpful because they often explain specific difficulties with certain breast pumps.

trigger-type manual breast pump
The pumping action is created with a squeeze handle similar to what one finds on a spray bottle. A one-handed breast pump.

VIA
Avent’s sturdy disposable container system for the collection and storage of breast milk. It can be used with all of Avent’s breast pumps and some other brands also. The disposable cup bases can be sterilized up to three times and are also suitable for freezing. Bottle nipples in a variety of flows are available to fit the system.

warranty
The warranty for breast pumps should be paid attention to and sales receipts saved. Pumps that get frequent use may wear out before their warranties expire.

Raising Bilingual Children: The 5 Most Common Myths

Posted on September 3rd, 2006. About Children.

Software Scripts Resources

“Doesn’t she speak English? Oh, I see — both Swedish and English. Doesn’t that get awfully confusing? Swedish, you said — when will she use that?” Get used to hearing these kinds of things. You’ll get opinions from the barista at Starbucks, your mother-in-law, even your neighbors and strangers on the street. Remember, being a trendsetter always ruffles some feathers, and the best way to deal with unsolicited advice (other than running for the door) is to know the facts for yourself.

Here are the most persistent myths on raising bilingual children:

“Your child will be confused by learning more than one language.”

This belief is prevalent in monolingual countries and has far more politics than science to back it up. Rest assured that your child’s little brain has more than enough neurons firing to cope with two languages (or even more) without frizzing out. On the contrary, decades of research in countless studies actually show significant cognitive advantages to being multilingual. And what about the experience of millions of families around the world where multilingualism is the norm, not the exception? Just look at Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and Finland — to mention a few.

“I can see two languages, maybe, but more than that is too much.”

Considering how much babies have to learn in their first years of life, another language really doesn’t add much to the load. As long the child is getting regular interactions in the second (or third) language, there won’t be problems. There is a reason why a two-year old child has fifty percent more synapses than an adult! Also, even if your child does not end up speaking all the languages, don’t underestimate the value of a passive language, i.e. understanding it but not yet speaking it. If you already understand a language it is magnitudes easier to learn it later in school or as an adult, compared to someone who’d never heard it before. So, even ‘just’ understanding another language is definitely not a wasted effort.

“Your kid is going to get all these languages mixed up.”

It is true that some mixing will occur, but that is both harmless and temporary. As the child builds her vocabulary in each language, this phenomenon automatically disappears. How many monolingual children automatically fix mistakes after correct usage has been learned?

For example, children begin by saying things like “Me want,” when they mean “I want.” And how many of them are still saying, “Me want,” at five? Eventually, the multilingual child learns correct usage in the same fashion as any other child. If you don’t mix languages in your own conversation, it’ll make it much simpler for your child to remain consistent as well.

“Why start now? Later your kid will pick it up in no time.”

For all those who think it’s a huge intellectual burden on your child to grow up with multiple languages, there’ll be those who will tell you how easy it is. “Just go to a Spanish playgroup once a week. You don’t have to speak it yourself to her all the time!” This is highly unrealistic. Studies indicate that children need exposure to a different language about one third of their waking hours to become actively bilingual. They’ll understand a lot with less interaction, but they probably won’t be able to speak it themselves. Learning a second language is simple for children, relative to adults, but a child needs to hear a word thousands of times in all kinds of contexts before it sticks — unless it’s a bad word, then miraculously you only have to say it once…

“Reading and writing in several languages? Some kids can’t even handle that in one language.”

It’s true that many children have difficulties reading and writing well. However, reading and writing is a ‘coding / decoding’ process and is not linked to the number of languages a child speaks, as such — although it could involve multiple alphabets, and then be a bit more work. Interestingly enough, access to multiple languages actually makes it easier for children to understand the nature of language itself, which, in turn, improves overall literacy skills. Research supports what many parents have long felt: that multilingual children have better-developed linguistic understanding.

Still, if you are in a hurry or find that politely ignoring the groundless opinions thrown your way doesn’t work, you can always ask if they think Einstein’s intellect suffered growing up with both German and Italian. And, he didn’t start talking until he was three years old either, but he certainly seemed to make up for lost time

Are You Setting Limits for Your Teen?

Posted on September 2nd, 2006. About Children.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

July 14, 2006 Most teens claim not to want limits, but, deep down, they really do. Parents need to decide and agree upon the limits that are absolute - what they expect their teenager to do or not to do - and make these very clear to the teen, with an understanding of what the consequences will be if these limits are not respected. At the same time, teenagers need an increasing amount of autonomy and decision-making power.

Decide which issues are negotiable - and sit down and work out some compromises with your teen. For example you may decide that she can date with certain restrictions - e.g., the boy must be her age or not more than a year older, no unsupervised parties, no car dates, etc. When she feels that she has some power to make choices in some areas of her life, she will be more likely to observe the limits you set.

You may decide that she can date with certain restrictions - e.g., the boy must be her age or not more than a year older, no unsupervised parties, no car dates, etc. When she feels that she has some power to make choices in some areas of her life, she will be more likely to observe the limits you set.

In the absence of peer pressure to engage in dangerous or particularly undesirable behavior, it may be best to say little beyond this, to encourage more positive friendships and to let the questionable friendships unravel in their own time, as they probably will. (On the other hand, if you show continual, obvious distaste for a friend, the teen may cling even more tightly to that friendship.)

Regarding friends you don’t approve of: let your teen knows that you have some reservations about some friends and tell them why, then invite them to tell you how they feel about these friends. Listen without interrupting or arguing. Talk with your teen. Without attacking their friends personally.

If you know, however, that a friend is pressuring your teen to drink, take drugs, steal, cut school or to engage in other serious risk-taking behavior, it’s time to voice more than simple disapproval. You need to step in and limit, even forbid the friendship. However, this should be only your last-ditch approach. Save this only for situations where you feel your teen is in definite danger. Don’t dilute this friend veto-power with over-use.

Remember that teens have mixed feelings about limits that mirror their developmental position between childhood and adulthood: while they may balk at limits, argue with them and claim to have the maturity to make all of their own choices, they feel quietly reassured when parents step in and let them know what they expect of them. Deep down, most teenagers see limits as reassuring, as a sign of ongoing parental protection, and as proof that their parents really care.

Teens and Privacy

A recent university study has found that teenagers have fewer problems when their privacy is respected at home. This means that parents do not open their mail, eavesdrop on phone conversations or search their rooms, especially in the absence of a serious problem like obvious drug abuse.

When teens feel secure in their own little private corner of the house, they are likely to feel more trusted and competent — getting a valuable foretaste of independence and, since they aren’t so inclined to fight for independence, they are more likely to share more of themselves with parents!

Also, respect your teen’s privacy regarding his body. Young teens are often quite self conscious about body changes. They can be devastated by teasing or critical comments. Don’t ask invasive questions about sexuality, like “How did you make out?” This reinforces peer pressure for your son to be sexually active before he’s emotionally ready.

Do let your teen know what your values are, and your availability to discuss any matter, or to answer any question.

Accept your teen’s separateness — allow areas of privacy in his life. This can help him to grow up to think for himself, and to take more responsibility for his own life. If you are a parent, try to be conscious of your teen’s behavior without overreacting.

Teddy Bears - a brief history lesson

Posted on August 30th, 2006. About Children.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

It is difficult to trace the history of the teddy bear, because it appears to have been invented independently at around the same time in America and in Germany. There is no possibility of copying, as communications technology at the time certainly wasn’t good enough for people from opposite sides of the Atlantic to be talking to each other about toy bears – it seems that teddy bears were just an idea whose time had come. For this reason, it is best to trace the American and German stories separately.

In 1902 Germany, the Steiff toy company was trying to come up with new products. The owner’s nephew, Richard Steiff, often visited Stuttgart Zoo to get inspiration for new toys, and on one visit was particularly taken with a cute bear cub. He did lots of drawings of it, and had produced a prototype of the toy, the Steiff Bear, that year.

Teddy bears got their start in America because of a widely-reported event involving President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt going hunting in that same year, 1902. According to the story, Mississippi officials, keen to please the president, took him bear hunting, but the hunt was a failure as there were no bears to be found. One of the officials then brought the president a baby bear that he had caught and invited him to make the kill, but the president refused. Two toy-makers in New York quickly made a cute-looking toy baby bear, calling it ‘Teddy’s Bear’ – and it was a runaway hit, with a huge factory built just to fulfil the demand.

It is here that the two stories meet. When Steiff launched its bear at a 1903 toy fair, the American toy buyers realised that they could import this bear and capitalise on teddy bear fever. They ordered 3,000 Steiff Bears, and the bears quickly became some of the most popular teddies both in Germany and America – and from there, the craze spread worldwide.

John Gibb is the owner of , For more information on Teddy Bears check out http://www.TeddyBear-information.info
