In the absence of any objective medical tests to determine who has ADD or ADHD, doctors rely in part on standardized assessments and the … all » impressions of teachers and guardians while the they administer leave little room for other causes or aggravating factors, such as diet, or environment. Hence, diagnosing a child or adolescent with ADD or ADHD is often the outcome, although no organic basis for either disease has yet to be clinically proven. Psychiatrists may then prescribe psychotropic drugs for the children without first without making it clear to parents that these medications can have severe side-effects including insomnia, loss of appetite, headaches, psychotic symptoms and even potentially fatal adverse reactions, such as cardiac arrhythmia. And yet, despite these dangers, many school systems actually work with government agencies to force parents to drug their children, threatening those who refuse with the prospect of having their children taken from the home unless they cooperate.

iPod Music, Movies and Downloads

The iPod has got to be one of the most trendy technological item on the market for a wide variety of age groups. Also known as an MP3 player, the iPod has taken the market with Apple’s newest iPods that allow you to watch movies right from your player. It is actually quite amazing technology. Originally, the iPod was a bit bigger than some of the other MP3 players on the market. But the benefit to the iPod was the fact it was hard drive based allowing the player to hold thousands of songs. One of Apple’s latest, the iPod Nano uses Flash based memory so it is quite smaller than the original iPod. In fact, it is so thin, like the new RAZR phones.

One of iPods high popularity is Apples music player, called iTunes. iTunes is the internets largest music store allowing iPod owners to download tracks directly to their computer or to their iPod.

iTunes, although very convenient, can be very costly to the teenager or smaller child as the music and movies are paid for on a per item basis. Most songs run around a dollar a piece with the movies being much higher.

During my research of this article I found several websites that allow you to pay a one time membership fee with unlimited iPod downloads. To me, if you download a lot of iPod music and especially iPod movies, would be a good investment. If you stop and total up the per cost, over time you may spend thousands of dollars.

Most of these websites I came across ran between forty to fifty dollars for a lifetime, unlimited membership.

If you want to check out the information for yourself I have reviewed several of these sites and you can read my personal reviews by Clicking Here .

The iPod is amazing, but it also is an expensive MP3 player. There are many different types of MP3 players on the market today that cost a lot less, but many of them do not have quite the technological features nor do they have iTunes capabilities. Before you decide to purchase, investigate thoroughly, the pros and cons, but in my opinion, the iPods are worth the money.

Thomas the Train: The Nicest Train Ever

Who doesn’t know Thomas the train? With a huge number of different stories and over sixty years of continuous success, there is virtually no place on earth that hasn’t heard of the adventures of this little talking locomotive that resides on the magical island of Sodor. Thomas the Train and all of his friends have brought magic into children’s lives for generations, and continue to do so tale after tale.

Thomas was born back in the year of 1943 when its creator Wilbert Awdry, a reverend who had been fond of trains since he was a small kid, began making up stories for his son Christopher, who was ill and had to rest in bed for quite a while. The stories were about a happy little locomotive named Thomas and some of his friends that consisted of different characters based on different models of locomotives.

His son soon became a fan of his father’s stories, and as such he could remember every single detail of every single story. To preserve consistency between them, the reverend began taking notes about each character he made up and the key actions they performed, and soon he had an entire description of every single one of those characters including their moods and way of talking.

As little Christopher asked his father to tell him the stories once and again, the reverend soon memorized them and was able to tell them exactly the same way each time without even reading them.

In 1945, the reverend Awdry’s wife encouraged him to get those stories published to entertain not only Christopher, but also a lot of other kids. Soon, they met a retired businessman that was looking for something to do in his retirement. That man’s name was Edmund Ward. Mr. Ward decided to publish the Thomas the Train tales and soon the first book came out. It was a booming success.

Several years and twenty six Thomas the Train books later, reverend Awdry decided to stop writing because he was getting too old for that. He passed the torch to his son Christopher, who continued writing stories for the Thomas the Train series of books.

Nowadays, Thomas the Train stories are available worldwide, and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Pretty good for a talking train who has never left the island of Sodor!

Today, Thomas the Train has his own TV show and a complete line of merchandise for children. From DVD’s and videos to toys and games, this small friend of all has really conquered the hearts of literally hundreds of thousand children not only across the world, but also across the years.

It really makes me happy to see that Thomas the Train and his stories still are able to charm the world. The kind of healthy entertainment and fun they provide is becoming rarer and rarer these days, and finding adequate stories for kids seems to be harder than ever. I hope we can enjoy Thomas the Train for many times to come, as I am sure that our grandchildren will be touched by the Thomas the Train stories just like we and our children are.

Comic Books - Did you know?

It is hard to trace the history of comic books, as many countries seem to have come up with the idea independently of one another. In Britain, they go back to the late 18th century, and in Japan the late 17th. If we’re talking about the worldwide explosion of comic book popularity in the format we know today, however, it can be most easily traced back to 1930s America, especially the beginning of the Superman series in 1938.

Since then, comic books have been both hugely in fashion, and very much out of fashion. The situation today, though, is most interesting: children have largely abandoned comic books for video games and television, with the few big-selling comics of today being largely restricted to the big names – and even they aren’t doing so well, at least in the West. Manga comics in Japan outsell comics in America by over fifty to one, and the influence of manga (and its animated cousin, anime) is pervasive in Japanese society.

The last generation to grow up with comics in the West, however, still has a special place in its heart for them. Adults have started to take over comic book culture, both by collecting the classics and by struggling to legitimise new comic books, now often called ‘graphic novels’, as an art form. These graphic novels use the comic book format to tell darker, more serious stories, with higher aspirations than comic books both in terms of their stories and the quality of the drawing.

This adult interest in comic books has seen an explosion in the number of films being based on them, from Superman and Batman in the ‘90s to the X-Men and Spider-Man films today. These films have been some of the highest-earning in movie history, making far more money for the comic book companies than comic books themselves ever have, and bringing the comic book superheroes into the TV generation.
